Sometimes You're The Statue

One of the hardest things to do when you have been essentially doing the same job for 20 years is to stay current and sharp. Most companies will endeavour to give some forms of development but how do you do it for yourself?

Gorgeous hubby was lucky when he worked for Sainsbury’s as he received loads of developmental opportunities with them most of which he shared with me (because that’s the kind of guy he is).
The one who has the greatest and longest effect? Dr Alan Zimmerman. Ask anyone who has ever worked with me and say Tuesday Tip and they will smile and say ahhh Dr Z (always pronounced American-style). Every Tuesday morning Dr Z would send out his Tuesday Tip. I would take 10 minutes for Dr Z and me.

Over the years I’ve subscribed to the Tips (and I still read them now) there are two that stand out the best.
Accept that sometimes you’re the statue and sometimes the pigeon. And I guess that some of the inspiration for Lemons comes from this sentiment. Lemons are your statue days whereas gin and tonics are your pigeon days. Right now as you’ve probably seen ESDIL is firmly the statue…. I can’t wait for her to have her pigeon moment though……
Good enough is no longer good enough. This applies to everything, work, home, relationships and it’s not about more either. It’s about better, being a better boss, company, partner, even skittle player (keep hoping Rose Costello!).
So take ten – you deserve it, read and reflect and make time for your own development.
