Our closest town is Melksham and when we first moved here 10 years ago, there really was only one choice of supermarket and that was Sainsbury’s. Asda, has now joined Sainsbury’s – but joy of joys a few years ago the local Somerfield became a Waitrose. Melksham is the kind of place that felt ever so slightly posh when they got a Costa so you can imagine the estate agents’ glee at the lovely green livery of Waitrose becoming part of the landscape.

I love Waitrose, I love watching people balance their precious cups of free coffee with three bags of shopping – because they are entitled. I equally love the Facebook group ‘Overheard in Waitrose’ reverse snobbery at its best! And then best of all I love the Waitrose reduced to clear section.
Mr A senior was a retailer and as a result he knows all the ins and outs of supermarkets – he knows when bargains are to be had. In fact he has a really particular skill of being able to tell you how big a shop is in square feet simply by looking at the outside and then being able to tell you how much money they take a week. In fairness I can equal this niche skill with being able to tell you how many bedrooms a hotel has by looking at it from the outside. So horses for courses…..
Anyhoo, back to bargains, the tradition of Waitrose Wednesdays started many years ago when we lived in Marlow. Waitrose is passionate about the quality of their food offering so what's on the shelves is always the freshest. Wednesday was a regular day off for us and Wednesday was also the day that Waitrose reduced lots of its fresh food in preparation for the weekend delivery coming in on Thursday. So now as semi-retired peeps it’s a regular fixture in the week.
Here’s what you need to know:
Don’t go too early – the staff need to get round to put the reduced stickers on the food.
Keep an eye on the weather – poor weather in summer = BBQ bargains galore.
Your freezer is your friend – ours is chock-a-block with Waitrose Wednesday bargains.
Get adventurous, maybe it’s reduced because it’s not popular or common, get the recipe book out and experiment.
Christmas Eve is a treasure trove after lunch time, best bargain EVER a four rib of 28 day-aged beef for £20, yes really, we called it Daisy…
So over to you guys – what’s been the best bargain you’ve ever bagged in a supermarket?
